2022 Oscars winners: History is made on night of few surprises - and one wild altercation

A star-studded audience has assembled once again at the Dolby Theatre

The 2022 Oscars made history on Sunday after Ariana Debose became the first openly queer actor to win one of the major four acting awards, a streaming service picked up Best Picture, and for the first time in the Academy's 94-year history, a women won Best Director for the second year in a row.

But the night was sullied when Will Smith appeared to attack Chris Rock live on stage after a comment about Will's wife Jada; he apologized during a tearful acceptance speech as he won his first acting Oscar just moments later.

Ariana, the star of was the first winner of the night and she spoke of her identity as a queer Puerto Rican women. "Now you see why Anita sings 'I want to be in America,' because even in this world we live in, dreams do come true and that is a heartening thing right now,' she said. 

"You see an openly queer woman of color who found her stregth in life through art," she concluded.

Jane Campion picked up Best Director for making her the third female winner ever and making 2022 the first year women have won back-to-back.

Troy Kotsur was considered a sure thing to become the second deaf actor ever to win an Academy Award for his performance in - his co-star Marlee Matlin was the first deaf winner at the Oscars for 1986's - and he gave a moving speech, thamking his father.

Apple TV+ distributed the film, making it the first time a streaming service has conquered Hollywood's most coveted film prize.

Elsewhere, Kenneth Branagh broke the record for being the first individual nominated in seven different categories throughout his career, and he finally took home a statue, winning Best Original Screenplay for .
